అడిగితే, "He is my best friend."

Nice explanation! Did you finish reading the entire book already? Of course, it takes much more time to really understand the content. And then may be many lifetimes to put it in practice. Will expect more articles from you.

BTW, Vivekananda responded the following to a question. Would be interested to know your thoughts on this:

What should be our attitude to the Vedas?

Swami Vivekananda - The Vedas, i.e. only those portions of them which agree with reason, are to be accepted as authority. Other Shastras, such as the Purânas etc., are only to be accepted so far as they do not go against the Vedas. All the religious thoughts that have come subsequent to the Vedas, in the world, in whatever part of it have been derived from the Vedas

@Phanindra

Yes, I read the book with the Samskrtam Slokas and English translation.

According to Jagadgurus like Krshna Paramatma, Adi Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhvachaarya -- the Vedas are above everything else. They are the foremost authority for Sanatana Dharma. You would've heard the story of Dharmapala (Guru of Mandana Misra before he became a disciple of Adi Sankara). Equal to the Vedas are Bhagavadgita, Upanishads and Brahma Sutras. Together, they are called Prasthanatrayi. All the great Gurus have commented on these three.

Unfortunately, the Puranas cannot be held as a standard except for imbibing bhakti in individuals. In my opinion, they could have been heavily modified with individual opinions and ulterior motives. Such verses in Puranas, Itihaasaas are called "Prakshiptams".

But what about some illogical verses in Vedas? I do not know of any good examples but I heard of them and since Vivekananda himself commented on that, it must be true.

Shouldn't we be courageous enough to discard things in Vedas which we feel are not logical not very well-intended?

Ofcourse, you can always say that it is an "interpretation mistake". But to interpret correctly, we have to sometimes make lengthy, strange and not so convincing arguments. So isnt it better to discard such verses?

Who are we to either retain or discard anything contained in the Vedas acording to our personal whims and fancies ? If not religious, they are at least historical documents. A document is an ancestral heritage of the nation and needs to be preserved as it is in its entirety, even if it sounds prejudicial to our contemporary convictions and logic ? After all religion is faith in action and need not have any logic behind it. After all, today we are NOT following the Vedas to the 100% extent. So, wheer does the expediency of getting rid of some portions arise ?

But the crux of the matter is, the Vedic language is exactly not the Sanksrit which we know today. Meanings have changed much beyond recognition in the past 6,000 years. The word Kratu, for example, means intention in the Vedic Sanskrit, while we understand it as yajna in modern Sanskrit. There are hundreds of such words. Even the Vedic grammar is different. I learnt that it was the common spoken language of laymen at that time.

So, before accusing some portions of the Vedas of being illogical and inconsistent, we need to accept the fact that we, as modern people far removed from the age of their origin, are prone to making grave Himalayan blunders while trying to interpret them.

@Phanindra

To understand Vedas is beyond our abilities. Each letter in Vedas has several meanings. Did you notice that while reciting some Vedas, the same word is repeating with different intonations several times in each verse?

The power of Vedas has stood the test of times. I will give you a few examples from the folklore and in the modern days too:

1. Mandana Misra's guru learned Buddhism under the pretext of an anti-Vedic person although he was a staunch believer of Vedas. One day his Guru started accusing Vedas beyond his point of tolerance and tears escaped his eyes. His Guru realized that he was a Vedic believer and asked his other disciples to push him from the peak of a hill. They did. At that time, he uttered aloud "If the Vedas are true, nothing shall happen to me". He lost one eye. He realized that by adding an "If" before "Vedas are true", he himself gave a source of doubt on Vedas. And therefore, he lost one eye. He finally sat in a funeral pire to absolve the sin of cheating a Guru (by giving wrong information about himself).

2. Did you read about Raghavendra Swami? Folklore has it that the Gandham he made while reading the verses related to Agni (from Vedas) used burnt the skin of those who applied it and that made while he was reading verses related to Varuna had a very soothing effect like water. We cannot afford to suspect the greatness of Raghavendra Swami because there are documented evidences in the British government about his spiritual advancement:

3. The most recent scientific experiment held in Kerala concluded that certain Yajnas have a positive effect on the growth of plants:

Vivekananda is a great saint and there is no doubt about it. But one must remember that the period during which he lived is a period of massive misinterpretation of certain Vedic scriptures for personal benefits. His intention in those statements would just be to avoid such exploitations.

Personally, while I believe that Vivekananda is a great Yogi, I believe that he intentionally tweaked our philosophies to suit the society. I find it hard to justify some of his statements that I have heard from unreliable sources (e.g., Adi Sankara borrowed thoughts from Buddha, Believing in collective liberation) since they are against evidence and Upanishadic logic.

In real life, my idols are people like Ramana Maharshi who are jeevanmuktas. I drew the chart at the time Ramana Maharshi left his body. I could clearly see his soul being liberated. While he was following very few of Vedic rituals, he never made any statement against them. It must be noted that while Vedic scriptures are a way to liberation for common man, once you approach liberation, emphasis on rituals is not important. Few avatarapurushas are able to reach liberation without the support of Vedas and in my life, so far, I found only one such person -- Ramana Maharshi.

@LBS and @Sandeep

I was completely misunderstood. I did not say any word against Vedas nor did I say that we need to remove some verses from Vedas! My knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is very very little, but I have great admiration for the pearls of wisdom contained in them.

Let us say you start understanding the Vedas. And let us say you did not find some verses satisfying. You try to find explanations from great souls but still it is not appealing. Then what would you do? You just leave it and go the next verse. I believe we should have the courage to do this - "I did not find this good, may be my understanding is limited and the error is mine. But I will not accept it till I find a better explanation". Thats the attitude Vivekananda is speaking of. I agree with him, though you may not quite agree.

@Phanindra

The first line of your 2nd comment on the post "But what about some illogical verses in Vedas?" is a little dangerous if misunderstood :)

Anyway, traditionally many of our saints have had the courage to say "I'm not satisfied with this explanation of the verses in the Vedas". Adi Sankara was indisputable for over a millennium before Ramanuja expressed his unhappiness about some of the purports given by Adi Sankara. At that time, saying something against Adi Sankara could be fatal. Later Madhvacharya did the same to both Adi Sankara and Ramanuja. There are several schools which interpret Upanishads in different ways -- Advaitam, Visishtadvaitam, Dvaitam, Dvaitadvaitam, Achitnya Bhedabhedam and many more. Usually, the debate is about the interpretation of certain Upanishadic verses but not Vedas. But there is a possibility of them projecting different Vedic verses differently too.

To answer your question in one line, "It's OK to say - I am not able to wholeheartedly accept this explanation of the verse. But it is NEVER OK to say, this verse is meaningless". In fact, as I type this my mind trembled for a moment. Certain verses of Upanishads, Vedas may be lost or modified -- either in word or in meaning, but the sheer position of Vedas and Upanishads in Sanatana Dharma is unquestionable and supreme.

@Sandeep

Well, my question is clear enough. I asked it in a specific context too. I often notice that we (yes, including me) jump to conclusions when someone puts an uncomfortable question. We quickly label and generalize. This is a trap which we should be aware of.

I got what you said - Vedas are ultimate and any misunderstanding is our error not that of Vedas. While I have great respect for Vedas, I am OK to ignore some verses i.e even if someone says some verses in Vedas are bad, I can accept it.

BTW, I like upanishads more than Vedas coz they deal directly with the philosophical essence and are more specific & organized.

Sandeep P said...

@Phanindra

Now that I seem to have a clear understanding of your question through your own explanation, the apparent initial meaning of your question is immaterial to us and others who follow the discussion completely. And that's desired.

Upanishads have been extolled by all Gurus from Krishna Paramatma. While Vedas cater to all the purusharthas (to the best of my understanding), Upanishads primarily concentrate on Mokshartham -- which is why, they are of utmost importance.
